Lemon Juice – natural selection


Ever since I can remember, my mum has seasoned green salads with lemon juice, oil, and salt, and I never thought to ask her why. I mean why would I, it tastes great. But I came across an interesting fact recently which may answer this question.

If you’ve ever looked into the food you eat, specifically¬†the healthy stuff, you would have come across activators. Basically these are foods which when eaten together with other foods actually improve the body’s ability to extract more goodness from that food you are eating.

One such activator combination is pepper and turmeric. Turmeric alone is good for you, but combine it with pepper and boom, you increase the your ability to extract that goodness from the turmeric.

And what do you know, another activator is lemon juice (or citrus) for leafy greens. Add lemon juice to your green salads and boom, increase the goodness your body extracts from them.

So after discovering this information, I did in fact asked my mum “why do you season with lemon juice?”, to see what her answer would be. She replied, “I don’t know, it’s how we’ve always done it.”

To me, this answer is huge, this answer is ancient pacha mama knowledge. It is knowledge that had once had power and meaning, but has since been lost. We forgot why we do it, or perhaps we never knew why we did it, and it was naturally selected for us. But either way, it has survived, and is still with us. Improving our health.

We don’t all have cultures that are deeply intertwined with the planet, like the Australian Aborigines or the Amazonian Indians, but every now and then we get a glimpse of our ancient link to this planet. Who says we’re not linked?
