Cinema advertising – slap me twice

Television is “free” because we allow the networks to show us ads during the shows. Fair enough. It’s a fair business transaction.

But why the hell do I need to sit through 20 minutes of advertising at the cinema when I’ve already paid $25 bucks (not to mention the other $25 bucks for coke and popcorn). It’s ludicrous.

I’m slapped at the counter, and then I’m slapped inside the cinema. My reward for arriving on time? 20 minutes of ads. Thank you very much Hoyts and Event Cinemas.

So, what needs to happen:

  1. Cinemas need to advertise the EXACT movie start time. This allows patrons to make their own decision as to whether or not they wish to watch ads. This includes previews!!! No asterisks mofos!
  2. Or, cinemas need to PAY me for my time. 20 minutes of my time at the current rate is roughly $85.00

It’s that simple.

We whine when Youtube puts an ad on our favourite cat video. Oh those sellouts, I hate ads, blah blah blah. But we have no problem with cinema’s stealing our time. That’s right, they are STEALING YOUR TIME!! because you have no say in the matter.

The further I get into entrepreneurship, the more I value my time. It’s all we have, and it’s sooo valuable, that once you start trying to achieve something, you realise how valuable and limited it is.

Sometimes we need a little down time, and the cinema is great for that, but don’t slap me twice.
